90s Diet Culture Time Capsule

By September 24, 2024September 27th, 2024No Comments

90s diet culture was all about low fat, no fat. But what else was happening in society? Thank goodness I found this 1995 issue of Shape Magazine stored away in my old closet! Join me as I flip through the pages, read through headlines, and dive deeper into the times with my friend and Registered Dietitian Amy Carlson. Amy was also with me for the 80s Diet Culture Time Capsule episode, be sure to check it out first!

In this episode, we continue our journey down memory lane. We giggle about the Got Milk?® campaigns, 90s grunge fashion, and tenderly discuss fat phobia and so-called “success stories”. After looking at the lies women were told in the 90s, we shift our focus to the messaging for this podcast and my prayer for this show. Enjoy this trek down memory lane and a look at what we can do with the lessons we’ve all learned along the way!

In this episode, we cover:

  • What we miss from the funky fresh 90s
  • A brief reminder of what Chrissy had experienced in the 80s
  • The different ads scattered in this issue of a 1995 Shape Magazine
  • What the messaging was around fat in the 90s
  • The foods they breakdown by calories, fat, etc. in the magazine
  • Flashback to the “Got Milk?®” campaigns
  • The tie between diet and exercise in 90s ads
  • How 17-year-old Chrissy was feeling reading this magazine
  • Different exercise equipment and tapes from the 90s
  • What Chrissy would tell her 17-year-old self
  • And if she would have received that message
  • Chrissy’s big mission for this podcast

Magazine Chrissy referenced during the episode

Maybe you were around for the fitness and “low fat” trends of the 90s, or maybe this is the first time you’re hearing about them. Regardless, we’re all able to learn a lesson or two from this messaging circa 1995. Send us your thoughts from this conversation about 90s diet culture to: admin@findingbalance.com

Check out 17-year-old Chrissy, also referenced in the episode. We’re big fans of the shirt, too!
